Microsoft has announced on the Office blog that the Office 2013 productivity suite will be getting its first Service Pack early next year.
Chris Schneider, Senior Marketing Manager at Microsoft, has written that the service pack will bring performance enhancements, feature updates and improved compatibility with Windows 8.1 to the Office 2013 productivity suite which includes Office, Sharepoint and Exchange. He also mentions that Office 365 users are updated regularly, hinting that they don't need to do anything different in order to acquire SP1.
Office 2013 was released last year and has been rumored to get a set of annual updates known by the codename "Gemini," similar to Windows' "Blue" updates. Microsoft had briefly demoed the Modern UI Office apps at BUILD 2013 which were at pre-alpha stage of development at that time.
It is not clear from today's announcement whether the service pack is a part of the "Gemini" updates and whether the Modern Office apps will be released in a revamped version of Office. But, as Chris mentions on the blog, Microsoft will brief customers when they have more details to share about the upcoming update.
