The Heartbleed computer bug: what you need to know

The Melissa virus. The Conficker worm. PoisonIvy. Fizzer.
The rogue's gallery of computer viruses, Trojan Horses, and vulnerabilities that lead to security warnings and public concern about the safety of their data is constantly growing. The latest perpetrator is the Heartbleed bug — a computer security vulnerability that came to public attention earlier this month.

Numerous companies now are both checking their own information technology systems to plug any such holes as well as reassuring customers they have nothing to fear. On its company blog last week, Pittsford print-related software and services firm Pharos Systems announced it had one customer using a custom version of a Pharos product that used software vulnerable to the Heartbleed bug.

"Pharos is working closely with this customer to resolve the limited risk situation," the company said, adding that it "is committed to the resolution of any security concerns of our customers and partners."
For the technically adept, Heartbleed takes advantage of a flaw in Secure Sockets Layer (or SSL) of open-source software OpenSSL.

For the rest of us, Heartbleed is a big deal and not something to ignore as it potentially makes users' passwords at risk.

"This was a very large-scale vulnerability," said Trevor Smith, executive vice president at Victor IT and computer security services firm Brite Computers.

So what exactly is Secure Sockets Layer and why should I care?
Think of computer communications — whether it's email or companies sending huge amounts of data — like a postcard, said Todd Colvin, director of data and systems security for Paychex Inc. "It travels from the sender to recipient, and anybody on the way could read the information on the back. That's an open communication.
The same is true for a good majority of the communications on the Internet. Any computer between point A and point B has an opportunity to review the messages. Where SSL comes in, it's a protocol to securely send information over." But if SSL is akin to a padlock on data being send over the Internet, Colvin said, "With Heartbleed vulnerability, people in between could potentially compromise the lock and the key used to encrypt the SSL message. If they intercept that, they can unlock it."

So is SSL itself bad? How does one even know if SSL is being used?
The vulnerability lies with one specific — though particularly popular — version of OpenSSL, said Colvin, who hastened to add that Paychex does not use the affected version of OpenSSL. "I don't want folks to look at OpenSSL and say it's not a good example of a product or solution."

One can tell if a particular service provider, such as your email provider, uses SSL just by looking at the URL of its website. If it says "https," that S "is the SSL underlying protocol to make sure sending-to-receiving computer, it's secure," Colvin said.

What should small businesses do?
Smith said businesses should immediately contact vendors — such as payroll services or customer relationship management services — and "find out what they're doing to shore up their applications and those services they provide to make sure they're not vulnerable.

Meanwhile, if a firm is internally managing its own IT infrastructure, it will need to identify and address whatever vulnerabilities it might have, Smith said. But if that work is outsourced and cloud bases, data protection is part of the contract with that provider.

So what should individuals do?
"I'd go to the service providers you use to find out who's addressing this issue — how they're responding to it," Smith said. "The other thing to do is change passwords. It's a good idea to change your password anyway on a frequent basis."

Numerous workplaces have employees change passwords every 30 or 90 days. "You should do the same thing as your own personal goal," Smith said.

While changing personal passwords "is frustrating, it provides an additional layer of security," Paychex's Colvin said. "I recommend to folks they look at complexity and uniqueness. There are known lists of easily identifiable passwords an attacker can use. And if you discover a company you've done business with is vulnerable, you might want to change your password now and do it again in a week or so" when the vulnerability presumably has been boarded up.

First Earth Sized Planet That May Hold Water

NASA announced this thrusday that it has confirmed for the first time the existence of an Earth-like planet that may hold liquid water.

The planet is Kepler-186f and was discovered with NASA’s Kepler telescope, originally launched in 2009 and recently crippled , but not before gathering enough data , the researchers are still working in getting maximum data for this planet.

Scientists Have Found That Kepler 186f May Hold Water And Life Is Possible On THis Planet . Kepler-186f is the fifth and outermost planet circling the M dwarf star Kepler-186 in the Milky Way, about 500 light years away in the constellation Cygnus.

According to NASA, the planet has a shorter year and might be a little cooler that is depended on his atmosphere. It orbits its sun once every 130 days . According to the scientists the planet will receive third part of sun energy as compare to earth receive sun’s energy — that puts it near the outer edge of the habitable zone.

While it will be a while before humans can start building building on this Earth cousin ( Kepler 186f) , it won’t be long before we start to have a better idea how common planets like Kepler-186f are in the universe. The discovery of Kepler-186f is a significant step toward finding worlds like our planet Earth .

NASA’s Astrophysics Division director, said in a release. that in Future NASA missions, like the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite and the James Webb Space Telescope, will be trying to discover the nearest rocky exoplanets and determine their composition and atmospheric conditions to know whether is life is possible on those exoplanets or not.

CONVERT FAT32 TO NTFS WITHOUT FORMATTING OR LOSING DATA

You have a flash drive or probably an external hard drive that currently has FAT32 file system and you want to change it to NTFS, because FAT32 does not support handling large files (over 4GB) or it is just simply old for your taste but there is just one problem, you don't want to lose your saved data. This article is for you then as it explains exactly how you can achieve seamless transition from FAT to NTFS without involving any data loss.

FAT32 to NTFS

While it is generally recommended to use the NTFS file system because of its stability, security and lesser defragmentation time, most of us end up using FAT32 because that is what most disks are preformatted with. Unless, we notice the “Not enough disk space error” despite disk space being available, we don't bother to change the file system. Moreover, most of us don't change it because of the risk of losing important data and lack of time (read laziness). As Microsoft was aware of this scenario, they added a capability in the command prompt to overcome this by executing a simple command. There are many software that support this too but the Convert command is one of the easiest ways to do so. Follow the steps below to know how:-

Important: While this method works perfectly, I would still advise you to backup your data in case anything goes wrong.

FAT 32 TO NTFS CONVERSION STEPS

1) Go to Computer, and note the name of the drive whose file system you wish to convert.
2) Click on Start.
3) Type cmd in the search bar if you use Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows Vista. If you use Windows XP, click on Run and then execute cmd
4) Execute "chkdsk h: /f " (without quotes) where H is the letter of the drive to undergo conversion. This checks the drive for errors and fixes them automatically.
5) Execute "Convert H: /FS:NTFS" (without quotes). H is again the letter of the drive to be converted.
6) The command prompt will start the conversion process and after a few minutes, CMD will say that conversion was successful.
7) You can check it in the properties of the drive through right click >> properties .

Convert FAT to NTFS

This works on Windows 7, Windows XP, Windows 8 and Windows Vista. I converted my flash drive's file system using these steps and it worked flawlessly. It is interesting to note that this method cannot be used to reconvert NTFS file system back to FAT32. To reconvert back to FAT32, you will need to format the entire drive which will definitely cause data loss.

Google To Track Down Cloned and Pirated Apps in the Play Store

Software Poster By Alltechinone

As we know that Google is always trying to be a step ahead of everyone else in internet. This time, the company has managed to obtain a patent that will help the company keep pirated apps out of the Google Play store.

It’s not exactly uncommon to discover apps that are extremely similar to already established ones. You don’t have to think further back than a few months ago, when Flappy Bird was being played by everyone. As soon as the app became famous, knock-offs started making their way online, much to the despair of everyone trying to get their hands on the actual app.

These are basically clone apps that are designed to take advantage of the popularity of the app they are ripping off in order to generate advertising money.

Google has been thinking of ways to kill off this trend that’s been plaguing the Google Play store for years. This is easier said than done, but Google seems to have come up with a plan that should work.

Back in July, the company applied for a patent that has only just been approved, which should be of help in keeping pirated and cloned apps away from the Play Store and the mobile devices of Android users.

The patent mentions a database of the authorized apps that have already been uploaded to Google Play by legitimate developers. Any apps uploaded after this are compared with the contents of the database in order to discover similarities.

The company won’t actually compare the entire apps to one another, but will look for code, data files, audio files and images. A special algorithm will provide a “similarity rating” that will tell the company whether the app is a knock-off or not.

Blanket scanning of apps, just like for any other area, would have caused a lot of issues for Google, so the company has implemented a filtering system.

“In order to prevent false positive results, the systems and methods herein filter these types of assets from the comparison. The determination as to which assets are considered to be trusted assets can be made based on data associated with the known software applications,” reads the patent Google received recently.

The reporting system is still available for developers to use in case they believe someone else is copying their aps.

All in all, This Idea Of Google is a great one and it could weed out quite a few apps already and certainly more that are to come from here on out.  Well ,  This Is Good News For All Of us .

Windows 8.1 Update to Launch on MSDN in Just a Couple of Days – Rumors

April is going to be quite a busy month of Microsoft, as the company will hold the BUILD 2014 developer conference in San Francisco that would basically witness the introduction of Windows 8.1 Update, while Redmond is also expected to share some details on the upcoming Windows 9.

Word is that MSDN subscribers could get Windows 8.1 Update before everyone else, as Microsoft is planning to give developers a chance to try out the upcoming pack of improvements in time for the debut of the BUILD event.

This way, Microsoft could get in touch with developers and collect feedback directly, while all users are expected to receive the update later the next month on April 8. Windows 8.1 Update will be delivered via Windows Update as a free download for everyone already running Windows 8.1.

If Windows 8.1 Update is indeed posted on MSDN in early April, it’s only natural to expect the installers to leak to the web soon after that, so those who can’t wait until Microsoft starts shipping the improvements to users via Windows Update will be able to deploy the new version manually in the next couple of days.

Rumor has it that Microsoft is also planning to release stand-alone ISO images with the upcoming Windows 8.1 Update, which would basically mean that users can install the operating system from scratch, without the need for the original installers shipped by Microsoft via Windows Update.

Windows 8.1 Update will bring quite a lot of changes to Microsoft’s core modern platform, including options that would enable users to pin Metro apps to the taskbar and launch them faster. This is actually paving the road for a much bigger improvement in Windows 9 that would basically merge the desktop and the Modern UI for a mix supposed to boost the adoption of the touch-based environment.

At the same time, Microsoft is also trying to spur the adoption of the Metro UI by adding features more appropriate for desktop computers, such as context menu-like options, power controls and a search bar straight on the Start screen, as well as links to the desktop Control Panel placed in the PC settings screen.

Some tweaks to the boot-to-desktop option are also expected to be made on desktop computers in order to skip the Start screen by default and thus make the operating system more appropriate for non-touch devices which are still relying on the mouse and keyboard as the main input method.

Samsung Might Have Only 4-5 Million Galaxy S5 Units Ready for Launch

There are roughly two weeks left until South Korean tech giant Samsung will bring to the market its latest Android-based flagship handset, namely the Galaxy S5, and it appears that it is still facing a series of production issues with it.
Apparently, the company might not have more than 4 or 5 million Galaxy S5 units ready for the big, worldwide launch, which could actually result in delays in some areas of the world.

Samsung reportedly aimed at having around 7 million Galaxy S5 devices ready for the release, but said that production issues prevented it from achieving this purpose.

According to some of the previous reports on the matter, the vendor ran into trouble when it came to the production of camera modules for the smartphone, with low yield seen due to a defective molding technology.

However, it appears that these issues have been resolved in the meantime, and that the production of the 16 MP ISOCELL camera, which features complex 6-elements optics, has ramped up.

Even so, the production problems did not go away, as Samsung is currently seeing issues with both the lens module and the coating process. The latter is said to be unstable.

Samsung did not offer a confirmation on said issues, but the fact that it actually scheduled the phone’s official release one month and a half after the launch might suggest that these problems are real.

Moreover, the company said today that it did not agree to release Galaxy S5 in South Korea earlier than initially planned, despite the fact that local carrier SK Telecom insisted on it.

The carrier won’t be able to sell the phone once it arrives on shelves on April 11, and will have to wait until May 19 to be able to add it to its offering. Apparently, Samsung is willing to wait for that day instead of releasing the phone earlier in the country.

Previous Galaxy S models have seen impressive demand all around the world, with tens of millions of units sold in the first days/weeks of availability, and the same is expected to happen with the new Galaxy S5 as well.

However, provided that the reports on said production issues are accurate, it remains to be seen whether Samsung will be able to meet demand for the device right from the start. The company is planning on making the Galaxy S5 available for purchase in 150 countries worldwide on April 11.

The Wi-Fi model with 16GB of internal storage onboard is £399 / $658 / €477, while the Wi-Fi 32GB version will take you back with £499 / $823 / €597. The same pricing applies to the LTE/4G model with 16GB.

The company is also awarding shoppers a three-year warranty for the tablet, if they are willing to throw in the extra pence.

The Sony Xperia Z2 tablet has introduced back at MWC 2014 in Barcelona, boasting a 10.1-inch screen with a full HD resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels) like its predecessor.

The slate is powered by a 2.3GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor (is actually one of the first to do so) combined with 3GB of RAM.

As for photography, there’s a capable 8.1MP on the back and 2.2 MP frontal camera in front. The slate runs Android 4.4. KitKat out of the box and is kept alive by a lofty 6000 mAh battery.

Microsoft: Windows XP Performance Is Sluggish at Best

We all know that Microsoft hopes to see everyone still on Windows XP migrating to Windows 8.1, but it’s pretty clear that this is not going to happen since 29 percent of desktops PCs are still running this OS version.

But Microsoft now claims that Windows XP’s “sluggish” performance should be the main reason why the majority of users should move to Windows 8.1, especially because the modern platform has some pretty great features and support for new technologies.

“The reality is that Windows XP is 13 years old and four generations behind,” Dean Edwards, Windows Business Group Manager for Microsoft New Zealand, was quoted as saying by TechDay.

“As a result, the operating system suffers from real technical limitations compared to say, Windows 8. Performance is now sluggish at best, as is the start-up, and modern devices will find it difficult to use.”

Windows XP, on the other hand, will very likely live beyond the April 8 deadline, with plenty of consumers saying that they want to stick to their existing installations despite Microsoft’s intentions to stop providing support and security patches.

Of course, the transition should be completed in less than 20 days if you really decide to upgrade; otherwise, the risks of getting hacked are growing bigger with every single day that passes after end of support is officially here.

Bill Gates: Microsoft Was Planning to Buy WhatsApp

Facebook officially purchased WhatsApp a few weeks ago, but it turns out that the social networking company wasn’t the only investor interesting in taking over the famous mobile app.

Bill Gates, Microsoft co-founder and now technical advisor, said in an interview with the Rolling Stones that the Redmond-based software giant was also willing to purchase WhatsApp, but he refused to provide any specifics on how much the company was willing to spend for the acquisition.

“Yeah, yeah. Microsoft was willing to buy it, too… I don’t know if it was for $19 billion, but the company’s extremely valuable,” Gates said when he was told that Google was also looking at WhatsApp.

As far as Mark Zuckerberg is concerned, Bill Gates said that Facebook’s founder is “more of a product manager” than he was at his age, but in the end” that’s not that major of a difference.”

“We’re both Harvard dropouts, we both had strong, stubborn views of what software could do. I give him more credit for shaping the user interface of his product,” he said.

“He’s more of a product manager than I was. I’m more of a coder, down in the bowels and the architecture, than he is. But, you know, that’s not that major of a difference. I start with architecture, and Mark starts with products, and Steve Jobs started with aesthetics.”

Steve Ballmer, former Microsoft CEO replaced at the helm of the company by Satya Nadella in February, said during an event at the Oxford University that WhatsApp isn’t worth that much.

Although his statements were at first surprising given the fact that no one knew that Microsoft was interested in buying WhatsApp, it not makes a little bit more sense given the fact that Facebook, Google, and the Redmond-based software firm were all involved in the talks.

“Sometimes, having a lot of people sign up represents usage, but it's a false metric [of value],” Ballmer explained earlier this month.

“Let's take WhatsApp. If you're goal was to sell the company they had the right goalset. Is it a fad, well probably not. I don't know if it will be successful or not. Will those 450m people ever generate enough revenue? Mark Zuckerberg [Facebook chief executive] believes so and [I have] no reason to doubt.”

A potential WhatsApp acquisition would have helped Microsoft with its mobile plans, especially because the company struggles to expand into this market area and continue its transition to a devices and services firm. Ballmer’s One Microsoft transformation plan was started in August 2013, but is set to be completed under the new CEO Satya Nadella.
