Windows 8.1 Update to Launch on MSDN in Just a Couple of Days – Rumors

April is going to be quite a busy month of Microsoft, as the company will hold the BUILD 2014 developer conference in San Francisco that would basically witness the introduction of Windows 8.1 Update, while Redmond is also expected to share some details on the upcoming Windows 9.

Word is that MSDN subscribers could get Windows 8.1 Update before everyone else, as Microsoft is planning to give developers a chance to try out the upcoming pack of improvements in time for the debut of the BUILD event.

This way, Microsoft could get in touch with developers and collect feedback directly, while all users are expected to receive the update later the next month on April 8. Windows 8.1 Update will be delivered via Windows Update as a free download for everyone already running Windows 8.1.

If Windows 8.1 Update is indeed posted on MSDN in early April, it’s only natural to expect the installers to leak to the web soon after that, so those who can’t wait until Microsoft starts shipping the improvements to users via Windows Update will be able to deploy the new version manually in the next couple of days.

Rumor has it that Microsoft is also planning to release stand-alone ISO images with the upcoming Windows 8.1 Update, which would basically mean that users can install the operating system from scratch, without the need for the original installers shipped by Microsoft via Windows Update.

Windows 8.1 Update will bring quite a lot of changes to Microsoft’s core modern platform, including options that would enable users to pin Metro apps to the taskbar and launch them faster. This is actually paving the road for a much bigger improvement in Windows 9 that would basically merge the desktop and the Modern UI for a mix supposed to boost the adoption of the touch-based environment.

Both series share a general interface design and some shared application frameworks for compatibility, but also have deeply different architectures.

Apple's original inception of the System deliberately sought to minimize the user's conceptual awareness of the operating system. Tasks which required more operating system knowledge on other systems would be accomplished by intuitive mouse gestures and simple graphic controls on a Macintosh, making the system more user-friendly and easily mastered. This would differentiate it from then current systems, such as MS-DOS, which were more technically challenging to operate.

The core of the system software was held in ROM, with updates originally provided free of charge by Apple dealers (on floppy disk). The user's involvement in an upgrade of the operating system was also minimized to running an installer, or simply replacing system files. This simplicity is what differentiated the product from others.

Early versions of Mac OS were compatible only with Motorola 68000-family Macintoshes. As Apple introduced computers with PowerPC hardware, the OS was ported to support this architecture. Mac OS 8.1 was the last version that could run on a "68K" processor (the 68040). OS X, which has superseded the "Classic" Mac OS, is compatible with only PowerPC processors from version 10.0 ("Cheetah") to version 10.3 ("Panther"). Both PowerPC and Intel processors are supported in version 10.4 ("Tiger", Intel only supported after an update) and version 10.5 ("Leopard"). 10.6 and later versions support only Intel processors.^[4]

The early Macintosh operating system initially consisted of two pieces of software, called "System" and "Finder", each with its own version number.^[5] System 7.5.1 was the first to include the Mac OS logo (a variation on the original Happy Mac startup icon), and Mac OS 7.6 was the first to be named "Mac OS".

Before the introduction of the later PowerPC G3-based systems, significant parts of the system were stored in physical ROM on the motherboard. It was succeeded by Windows 7, which was released to manufacturing on July 22, 2009 and released worldwide for retail on October 22, 2009.

New features of Windows Vista include an updated graphical user interface and visual style dubbed Aero, a new search component called Windows Search, redesigned networking, audio, print and display sub-systems, and new multimedia tools including Windows DVD Maker. Vista aimed to increase the level of communication between machines on a home network, using peer-to-peer technology to simplify sharing files and media between computers and devices. Windows Vista included version 3.0 of the .NET Framework, allowing software developers to write applications without traditional Windows APIs.

Microsoft's primary stated objective with Windows Vista was to improve the state of security in the Windows operating system.^[7] One common criticism of Windows XP and its predecessors was their commonly exploited security vulnerabilities and overall susceptibility to malware, viruses and buffer overflows. In light of this, Microsoft chairman Bill Gates announced in early 2002 a company-wide "Trustworthy Computing initiative," which aimed to incorporate security into every aspect of software development at the company. Microsoft stated that it prioritized improving the security of Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 above finishing Windows Vista, thus delaying its completion.

While these new features and security improvements have garnered positive reviews, Vista has also been the target of much criticism and negative press. Criticism of Windows Vista has targeted its high system requirements, its more restrictive licensing terms, the inclusion of a number of new digital rights management technologies aimed at restricting the copying of protected digital media, lack of compatibility with some pre-Vista hardware and software, and the number of authorization prompts for User Account Control. As a result of these and other issues, Windows Vista had seen initial adoption and satisfaction rates lower than Windows XP.^[8] However, with an estimated 330 million Internet users as of January 2009, it had been announced that Vista usage had surpassed Microsoft's pre-launch two-year-out expectations of achieving 200 million users.^[9][10] At the release of Windows 7 (October 2009), Windows Vista (with approximately 400 million Internet users) was the second most widely used operating system on the Internet with an approximately 19% market share, the most widely used being Windows XP with an approximately 63% market share.^[11] As of May 2010, Windows Vista's market share had an estimated range from 15% to 26%.^[12][13] On October 22, 2010, Microsoft ceased sales of retail copies of Windows Vista, and the OEM sales for Vista ceased a year later. ^[14] As of July 2013, Vista market share was 5.24%.
